Vollenhoven was a Dutch Entomologist. He was curator of entomological collections at the Natural History Museum, Leiden. In 1857 he founded Tijdschrift voor Entomologie, a journal of systematic and evolutionary entomology published by the Netherlands Entomological Society. He wrote many articles describing new species of insects. illustrating them with drawings of his specimens.

His drawings were converted to lithographs for printing by Abraham Jacobus Wendel, who worked at the printing house Arntz & Co. in Leiden
