The adult butterflies of this species are dark brown, with the hindwings fading to white at the edges.

The undersides are similar but have bluish spots under each wing. The wingspan is about 6 cms.

Various races of this species occur in

  • Indonesia,

    and subspecies occuring in Australia are

  • macleari Butler, 1887, on
    Christmas Island, and

  • malindeva Waterhouse, G.A. & Lyell, G. 1914, in the north of
    Western Australia.
