Johannes Coster was a medical doctor and naturalist and artist in Leiden in the nineteenth century. Dr. Coster practiced medicine in Leiden during a period of rapid evolution in clinical sciences. He was not just a general practitioner but a respected scholar who regularly published medical papers, translated foreign textbooks into Dutch, and compiled comprehensive reference manuals for European pharmacies and doctors.

He was also a talented scientific illustrator. He worked alongside professional lithographers like Abraham Jacobus Wendel, and printers like P.W.M. Trap . Together, they illustrated groundbreaking scientific logs detailing not only European animals and plants, but also new flora and fauna flowing into the Netherlands from colonial trade.
