Emil Hochdanz was a stone engraver in Stuttgart, creating lithographic plates for the various coloured printing inks for multi=coloured illustrations. After he died, his son Carl Hochdanz took over the company, keeping it trading as Emil Hochdanz Co. In 1899: Carl stepped down and sold the printing establishment to business partners Hermann Friese and Walther Hopf, still trading as Emil Hochdanz Co..

The company was engaged to prepare lithographic plates for the illustrations in The Macrolepidoptera of the World (1906-1954) by the editor Adalbert Seitz.

The Hochdanz plates for this publication were then sent Werner & Winter for printing.
