Pieter Snellen was a merchant and entomologist in Rotterdam, writing monographs in the journal Tijdschrift voor Entomologie, which were sometimes illustrated. For these ilustrations: he chose artists to draw them such as Dr. Johannes Jeronimus Coster, and these engraved and lithographed by the renowned A.J. Wendel & Co., and printed by P.W.M. Trap.
