John O. Westwood was born in Sheffield, the son of a medal and die maker. After an apprenticeship as a solicitor, he began making a living reproducing Anglo-Saxon and medieval manuscripts. He became an archaeologist, entomologist and artist, In 1824 he met Frederick William Hope, who later became Professor of Entomology at Oxford University. Hope donated his entomological collection to Oxford University, and Westwood was appointed Curator of the collection.
